Choosing a cage for your chinchillas can seem complicated as there are so many different designs available. Since chinchillas can live for many years it makes sense to get the largest cage you can in the first instance so that your pet has plenty of space.

You need around six cubic feet of space per chinchilla to allow them to stretch, bounce and jump. There needs to be plenty of room for wooden shelves, tubes and toys.

Barred cages are best for chinchillas as they are susceptible to heat stroke and need ample airflow. The base of the cage that the chinchilla sits on should be a solid surface as their feet are susceptible to pressure sores – where you have grid wire floors in a cage you can cover these with wood, tiles or use hammocks to provide levels.

The best chinchilla cages are made of metal like our Little Friends Aventura cage. The heavyweight construction means the cage doesn’t shake or rattle when your chinchilla bounces around. There is also loads of space for toys. Older chinchillas who are not as mobile may prefer lower cages with more horizontal space such as the Little Friends Atalanta cage.

Make sure that your cage has plenty of hiding places. Chinchillas are particularly keen on having high nest boxes. Make sure you have at least one nest box per chinchilla when they are paired so they can have some time on their own if they are fed up with each other!
