As the long summer holidays approach many owners will be asking themselves what they should do with their rabbits while they go on holiday. Essentially you have two options – you can either take your rabbit with you or leave it in the care of someone else (either a friend, pet sitter or a professional boarding establishment).

So which option should you choose? Well, this depends on a number of factors;

• Where are you going? If you are going abroad your rabbit would need a pet passport and specialist travel arrangements which can be expensive. Even then, only certain countries are part of the pet passport scheme.

On a short trip within the UK it is relatively easy to pop your rabbit in the car and take it with you. (See this useful PDF from the RSPCA for some hints and tips) Just make sure you plan ahead for rest breaks and don’t leave water bottles attached in the car – the motion of the vehicle makes them leak and you will arrive at your destination with a soggy rabbit!

• What is your rabbit like? You know your rabbit better than anyone. Is he super chilled out and relaxed on car journeys or does he turn into a nervous wreck? Relaxed bunnies are more likely to enjoy a holiday away whereas those who prefer comfort and familiarity may well be much happier boarding somewhere quiet or with someone coming to check on them at home.

• Do you have someone reliable who can care for your rabbit? Do you have a friend or neighbour who could care for your rabbit at home? Failing that, do you have a good pet sitter or boarding establishment nearby which specialises in rabbits?

If you are leaving your rabbit in the care of someone else, make sure that they are competent and know your rabbit’s routine, feeding schedule and that they have the number of your rabbit’s normal vet. If your rabbit will be boarding make sure all their vaccinations are up to date and visit first to check the facilities are clean and that any boarded rabbits look happy and well cared for.
