Degus have increased massively in popularity as pets over the last few years. They are extremely intelligent and easy to train but are also very fast and need careful handling to keep them safe.

The key to safely handling your degu is to build trust with them. A happy degu who is relaxed in your company will often be more than happy to come to you for a cuddle or a belly rub.

• NEVER pick your degu up by its tail. Degus are able to shed their tails as an anti predator mechanism but once they have done this the tail will never grow back. This is also very painful for them.
• NEVER allow your degu to sit on your hand while you are walking around as if he jumps off he could injure himself badly.
• ALWAYS make sure that your degu is fully awake before attempting to handle them.
• ALWAYS take handling slowly. A new degu may take several weeks to get used to you picking them up.

With a new or nervous degu never try to grab them. You need to build trust slowly. Try starting with your open palm in the cage and give them a special treat each time they sit on your hand. Eventually your degu will increase in confidence but you need to be patient!

Once your degu is happy being held and is settled in your company it is possible to carefully pick them up by putting your thumb behind their front legs and your fingers over their back. Lift gently and support the hind legs with your other hand. Alternatively, if your degu prefers you can gently cup both your hands below them and lift them up. To make sure your degu is safe, transfer them to your lap or chest where they can sit without being restrained by you. Degus don’t like to be fully enclosed by your hands. They are happier if they are able to sit on you and will stay for longer.
